Senior Engineer
Job Duties: Conduct research and provide engineering guidance and leadership for the development of internal views of modeled and non-modeled risks, prepare detailed site-specific risk assessments, conduct engineering analyses and site-inspections, evaluate the structural vulnerability components of vendor and other CAT models and platforms, develop internal tools and models to facilitate account underwriting decision-making, and manage less experienced engineers.
Specific duties include:
- Evaluate catastrophe risk of property assets for current and prospective accounts from a site-specific, engineering-based viewpoint. This includes assessing exposure information, reviewing hazard metrics, developing custom damageability functions using explicit advanced civil and structural analyses, and producing probabilistic loss estimates.
- Contribute to and lead the development of an internal view of catastrophe risk for buildings and other structures through literature review, probabilistic hazard analysis, advanced civil and structural engineering analysis, claims and damage data evaluations, and other independent research tasks. Development work will be incorporated into the larger risk methodology and models being used by BHSI.
- Critically evaluate vendor and open-source catastrophe models (e.g. Verisk, SP3, GEM, and others) to determine applicability to specific accounts, regions, and perils via the application of civil and structural engineering principles, probability, statistics, and performance-based engineering concepts, with the ultimate goal of determining the validity of these advanced risks to identify potential economic loss metrics during a natural catastrophe event.
- Communicate risk evaluation and risk and model development results to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Serve as an advisor to newer, less experienced engineers and have responsibility for the allocation of tasks and the oversight of their work product. Also, be effective as a guide and mentor for the professional growth of newer team members.
Position Requirements: Ph.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field. In the alternative, will accept a Master’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field with three years of relevant experience in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
Must also possess advanced technical knowledge and skills gained through academic research and/or academic coursework and/or relevant experience in the following areas:
- Structural analysis methodologies including probabilistic structural risk evaluation, advanced structural modeling, soil-structure interaction, and finite element methods.
- Statistical and probabilistic concepts and methodologies.
- Earthquake engineering and wind engineering concepts.
- U.S. and International structural design guidelines and practices.
- Hazard analytics and assessment of earthquake and windstorm perils.
- Programming in the following languages: Python, MATLAB, R, C++, SQL.
- Working knowledge of ArcGIS (or equivalent).

Underwriting Manager, Senior Care & Senior Living

This key role reports to the leader of the Senior Care business segment and will focus on product management such as training field underwriting staff, reviewing account referrals, as well as writing and updating underwriting guidelines and policy forms. The role will also involve significant market interaction with customers and brokers, and may include limited account assignments. Candidates will be considered for any location where BHSI has an office, but Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, or New York are preferred.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist in the development of guidelines and workflows that allow us to build a more efficient platform to better execute on targeted business and ultimately grow the portfolio and maintain profitability.
- Assist in conducting regular Underwriter training sessions to improve knowledge, risk selection, and effectiveness of front-line staff.
- Assist in form development and optimization as the market evolves and we act on lessons learned.
- Assist in working with actuarial to advance various risk selection and pricing optimization projects.
- Maintain a modest renewal book with some key broker partners to preserve first-hand knowledge and delivery of items above.

M&A Analyst, Transactional Liability

The Transactional Liability team provides insurance in connection with Mergers & Acquisitions, including Representation and Warranty Insurance, Tax Insurance, and Contingent Liability Insurance. In this role, the M&A Analyst will collaborate with the underwriters on the team to assist on M&A deals seeking insurance. The position will provide in-depth exposure to M&A deals and the insurance industry.

- Researching and analyzing company data, including reviewing financial statements, background information on targets and industries, and acquisition related documents.
- Managing a consistent stream of M&A deal opportunities that contemplate the use of transactional liability insurance.

Complex Claims Director, Executive & Professional
Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has an exciting opportunity for a Complex Claims Director in our New York, Chicago, Boston or Atlanta Office. The Complex Claims Director will independently handle a diverse mix of complex claims consisting of employment practices liability and directors’ and officers’ liability claims underwritten primarily out of the Private/Non-Profit unit. Experience handling Fiduciary and/or Fidelity/Crime claims is a plus. Candidates must have strong technical and analytic skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills, as this role will have a high level of interaction with customers, brokers, outside counsel (defense and coverage), mediators, underwriters, and senior management.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Independently evaluates information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of exposure to the insured and the company, with limited assistance from outside counsel.
- Collaborate with defense counsel on strategy and resolution. Effective participation in mediations on complex claims.
- Duties may include but are not limited to: proactively handling claims from first notice of loss through ultimate resolution, working with and advising internal partners on claims, developing a proactive plan of action for ultimate resolution, obtaining budgets and meeting with clients, counsel and brokers and reviewing and providing advice on policy wordings and risk selection.
- Provides outstanding customer service and technical expertise; works well with the insured, broker and underwriters in the handling and adjudication of claims.
- Analyze and draft coverage letters as appropriate and communicates complex coverage positions effectively.
- Drafts reports and makes recommendations concerning reserve changes.
- Travels to conferences, mediations, and client meetings as necessary.

- 10+ years’ experience, minimum five years claim handling experience with a carrier or equivalent coverage experience at a law firm.
- JD preferred.
